Find the item the way you remember it, by Description! You're looking for "Paper Plates" but the computer thinks it is "PAP123". Now you can type in what you remember, "Paper Plates", and ILD - Lookup Inventory By Description finds it for you! Plus, you can easily choose from several departments or vendors that provide the same item when items are sorted by Description instead of Department or Item Number. This useful tool adds description lookups to all Inventory Lookups in Sales Invoicing, Purchase Order and Inventory!

Before the new enhanced lookup will display, a new option, Rebuild Keys, must be run. This process creates special auxiliary files that contain record pointers to your Item Description in Inventory. Rebuild Keys will sort the record pointers by Item Description, so that when the enhanced lookup is used, descriptions starting with the same characters will be grouped together, regardless of Department and Item Number.

To run Rebuild Keys, select Maintain Inventory Options from the Maintenance programs for Inventory, then select Set Lookup Options:

Rebuild Keys will normally only be run when first installing the enhancement. The amount of time required for this process varies depending on the size of your inventory files and your hardware/software configuration. After creating special auxiliary files with Rebuild Keys, Lookup Inventory By Description will be available whenever F2 Lookup is used for an Inventory Item.

When F2-Lookup is pressed at the Department or Department/Item Number field, the following menu will appear:

The Lookup By Description box will display all items sorted by Description, starting with the entry you have made, or at the beginning of the file if the Starting Key is left blank.
